CHAPTER 14

DeShard kicked at the ashes of the fire that had been built by Tanner’s group, trying to get a sense of how long ago the fire had been lit.

“They camped here last night,” he stated, his voice echoing in the cavernous exit from the cave system. “Then they would have headed out to the jungle at daybreak.”

“Should we set up camp for the night? Night is almost upon us,” suggested Dragos while looking out at the strange jungle, now bathed in the red light of the setting sun.

“No, we will continue through the night if need be. Tanner and Ambrose can’t be far ahead.”

“Please, old boy,” sighed Buchannon, sitting on the ground and rubbing his feet. Daniels sat beside him. “It’s been an awfully trying day. Can’t we set out in the morning?”

Hilda hissed at him, like some hateful feline.

“Why, Mister Buchanon, you surprise me,” said DeShard with mock surprise.

“Why do you say that?” Buchannon sighed.

“Mister Tanner and Professor Ambrose are out there right now, exploring the wonders and mysteries this jungle has to offer. We are close, but if we falter in our resolve now, the prize shall be theirs.”

Buchannon pulled himself to his feet, looking miserable. “Right you are, old boy. Right you are.”

DeShard walked outside and breathed in the warm air, enjoying all the smells it carried. Hernandez and his men were patrolling the nearby area, ensuring the area was secure. He walked up to the mercenary leader, his chest out and his head carried high. He felt supremely in control of the situation, just as he liked it.

“Have you discovered any evidence of which direction Tanner’s party went?”

Hernandez looked DeShard up and down before answering. “Some of my men have discovered the route they have used. It is easy to follow. They aren’t expecting to be followed so are making no effort to cover their tracks.”

DeShard grinned. “Their mistaken sense of security is our opportunity. Very good.”

Hernandez went to say something when they were interrupted by one of his mercenaries. “In the trees. Something big is moving.”

Hernandez nodded before glancing at DeShard. “Wait here.” He then slowly began walking to the trees, rifle at the ready.

Feeling his heart beat in exhilaration, DeShard quickly returned to the cave and picked up his own weapon. Hilda could sense his excitement and her own rifle was quickly in her hands. “What is it, my love?”

“Something big, in the jungle. Could be big game.” He then left. Hilda, Dragos and Joe followed close behind him, leaving Buchannon and Daniels to their own devices.

“Are you not eager to join them?” asked Daniels, downing water from his canteen.

Buchannon frowned. “I think I’ll stay here.”

“It might be exciting. Isn’t that why you came here? For excitement and adventure?” There was an accusatory tone to Daniels’s words.

“You know, I think I’ve completely gone off adventure.”

***

DeShard spotted Hernandez and a group of his soldiers a few hundred meters into the jungle and made their way to him, as quietly as he could. The mercenaries had clearly seen something and were holding their positions with their rifles trained on the threat.
